哈比人歷險記敘述比爾博·巴金斯如何成為魔戒擁有者。J.R.R托爾金所著的前傳小說副題為《There and back again》。
故事記述哈比人比爾博與巫師甘道夫和13個矮人旅行橫越中土大陸，尋找一個被惡龍搶佔的屬於矮人珍貴寶物的探險故事。 故事背景設定在第三紀元2941年，主角哈比人比爾博·巴金斯，被甘道夫強迫加入索林·橡木盾等十三個矮人的旅程。
比爾博與甘道夫歷經食人妖、半獸人和惡狼折騰、到達瑞文戴爾、冒險穿越幽暗密林、被蜘蛛纏身又被關禁在地牢，後來終於遠征至被惡龍史矛革佔領的矮人寶山孤山，此時也爆發了五軍之戰。
當然，關鍵的魔戒和咕嚕也會出現在電影中!!!
